Sail
in the beautiful Balearics, which in ancient times were the sailing crossroads
of the Mediterranean. These are the waters of not only Spaniards, but Greeks and
Carthaginians, Romans and Arabs, Byzantines and Vandals. Today these islands are
a favorite playground for Europe, and what better way to enjoy their sun-filled
days than by sailing around rocky outcrops, finding picturesque anchorages and
secluded beaches, and visiting medieval fortresses and trendy nightspots.
After the flight to Palma de Mallorca via Barcelona, you will have time to
explore this bustling, historic city and its grand Gothic cathedral, which
dominates the waterfront from high on a hilltop. Or simply stroll the maze of
narrow lanes of the old town searching out beguiling Renaissance mansions. In
the evening, enjoy cocktails and dinner at a fashionable restaurant featuring
Catalan cuisine.
This charter location has plenty of sailing – a number of
medium-to-long-distance days at the beginning would allow you to circumnavigate
Mallorca. Heading south and west from Palma, you will sail the northwest coast
stopping at Port de Soller. Then, on around Cap de Formentor to Port de Pollença,
and next to Porto Cristo (where there are some absolutely spectacular caves). At
this point, you might take a more leisurely approach to have time to explore the
attractive calas (bays) along the southeastern coast. A peaceful overnight at
Illa de Cabrera, a national maritime park, will freshen you for the crossing
southwest to Ibiza with its incredible fort and it is well worth while making a
stop at Formentera.
